Missionaries with TEAM in Chad are mostly here through one of our North American parent organisations TEAM USA and TEAM Canada.
N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, is kingpin of the nation's infrastructure. Virtually all government ministries, telecommunications facilities, international and domestic transport facilities, and commercial concerns are based in this sprawling city of 1,000,000. TEAM operates an efficient, well-equipped facility to enable missionaries living in remote parts of this vast country to take advantage of this national infrastructure. Staffed by one or two missionary couples and a Chadian administrative assistant, this facility offers a wide range of services including guest facilities, banking services, airport arrivals and departures, shipping and purchasing, employee management, communications, and more.
Missionaries are working with the people in Chad to see the young church there mature to the point where it can stand on its own feet. They are involved in the discipleship of pastors, laymen, and laywomen, as well as the preaching of the gospel among the unsaved. There is also a low-power FM radio station which broadcasts to people in their language, as well as in the languages of the nomadic peoples of the region. Some are working to create an "oral Bible" by developing stories from the Bible in a local language using the story-telling style of a people group which is not yet literate. A goal is to allow small groups to hear, retell and examine these chronological stories in order to learn more about God. Other areas of work include community health evangelism, teaching literacy, and teaching English.
Missionary work cannot be done in a vacuum. Besides the important admisitrative and logistical support provided by those in the capital, there are other infrastructure needs which much be serviced for adequate operation in remote areas of the world. Some missionaries are therefore engaged in maintainence, construction, shipping, communications, management, and education.
TEAM Chad's primary facility for the education of missionary children is Palmview school in southern Chad. Palmview's purpose is to facilitate the academic and spiritual education of missionary children through classroom instruction and home school assistance. Many of the children who have come through Palmview have pursued a career in missions world wide. Palmview is an ACSI associate school, striving to provide high academic standards. The school also provides boarding facilities so that it can service children whose parents work in all parts of the country.
Producing Christian literature in the over 130 languages spoken in Chad has been a priority since the earliest days of missionary efforts in Chad, as the old linotype machine in TEAM's Printshop bore witness for many decades. Nowadays the linotype machine has been retired and replaced by offset presses, risographs, and digital technology, but the vision for quality literature in Chad's vernacular languages remains unchanged.
Staffed by an expatriate missionary and 4 Chadian employees, TEAM's printshop is located on Koutou Station, one of the original compounds in the south of the country. With an annual production of many pieces of literature and an annual revenue of few dollars, this facility is one of only two in the entire country dedicated to the production of evangelical literature in vernacular languages. This literature includes Scripture portions, literacy materials, discipleship materials, youth literature, AIDS prevention literature, song books, and journals of the national church in many different languages.
